Club History

Geraldines GFC was founded in 1904 and was initially known as Dundalk Geraldines. The Geraldines club originated in Dublin Street and chief men among the founders were Pat Sullivan, Barney Duffy, Charlie and Joe Sands, and Johnny McArdle. It is the second oldest club in the county. Ironically, the club’s first ever match was against Blackrock – part of the parish from which the present team is drawn.

The club play out of Mc Geough Park on the Marlbog Road as they have done since 1979. The field is named in honour of club stalwart, Jimmy McGeough who worked tirelessly for the development of the club and its facilities. Massive strides have been made with the addition of a second playing field, state of the art floodlights on both pitches and ongoing improvements to the playing surfaces and general club facilities. These efforts have been rewarded in recent years with the county board fixing many important championship games and inter county matches in Mc Geough Park.

The club has had success at all levels of adult football. In 1982, the Geraldines won their only Senior Title of modern times; there was success in the Junior Championship in 1939 and 1966 as well as capturing the Intermediate Championship in 1979, 1995, 2005 and 2013. We also won the Leinster Intermediate title in 2013. Under Eamon McEneaneys stewardship we defeated Naomh Olaf from Dublin in a replay in Parnell Park. Unfortunately we lost to Truagh from Co Monaghan in the All Ireland Semi-final played in Crossmaglen.

The Club provides coaching for teams from under 7 to under 18. In recent years there has been massive success at juvenile level with the club capturing 2 successive minor titles in 2007 and 2008 adding another in 2013. This followed on from their only previous minor championship win in 1995. The Club has represented Louth in the U-14 Féile na n-Óg competition in 1992, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2010 & 2019. The fruits of this underage success are beginning to be seen at adult level with many members of the senior panel being 24 or under after capturing the 2013 Intermediate Championship.

We introduced Ladies football to the club in 2007. We had immediate success winning the Louth Junior title in our first year & intermediate title in 2008. A restructuring of the underage girls brought immediate success. This saw us win an intermediate title again in 2015. We finally obtained the holy grail in 2019 when we became Louth Senior Champions and managed to retain the title in 2020 despite a Covid 19 interrupted season.

Proud of their GAA tradition, the Geraldines has had a representative on every All – Ireland winning Louth team: 1910 – Joe Johnston; 1912 – Joe Donnelly; 1957 Frank Lynch. Hopefully, the Gers will be part of future Louth successes. With the massive juvenile work that is taking place and the ongoing improvements to the facilities the future of the Geraldines club is very bright indeed.
